Aviation Attorney: Maintenance Records Could Be Critical to Determining Cause of Missouri Skydiving Plane Crash That Killed 12
Nashville, TN (FreePR.org) -- As federal investigators begin examining a Missouri plane crash that killed 12 people Sunday, a nationally recognized aviation attorney says maintenance records could provide some of the earliest clues into what caused the aircraft to lose power and crash shortly after takeoff.
The crash occurred on June 14 at around 11:30 a.m. local time near Butler Memorial Airport, approximately 65 miles south of Kansas City. Authorities said a Pacific Aerospace 750XL single-engine turboprop operated by Skydive Kansas City crashed in a field moments after departure. All 12 people on board — including the pilot and eleven skydivers — were killed.
According to initial reports, the aircraft reached only about 100 feet before it began descending. Witness accounts indicate the pilot may have attempted to turn toward a nearby roadway after the aircraft failed to gain altitude. Weather conditions do not appear to have been a significant factor.
The National Transportation Safety Board is expected to investigate the crash.
"Whenever an aircraft goes down immediately after takeoff, investigators typically focus on a short list of possibilities, including mechanical issues, engine performance, aircraft loading, and pilot response," said Keith Williams, an aviation attorney and former chair of the American Association for Justice's Aviation Litigation Section. "One of the first places investigators should look is the aircraft's maintenance history. The records can reveal whether inspections were completed, whether recurring mechanical issues existed, and whether any recommended repairs or service bulletins had been addressed."
Williams noted that aircraft maintenance documentation often plays a key role in accident investigations, particularly when a crash occurs during the critical takeoff phase of flight.
"At this stage, it's far too early to determine a cause," Williams said. "But the maintenance logs, engine records, and inspection history will likely be among the most important pieces of evidence investigators review."
